Obama and Hillary

I have stated in the past that I have lost some respect for McCain over the years. I feel he bent over and kissed the Republican establishment's behind over the last few years, all in the name of politic expediency.

If Obama selects Hillary as his running mate, he would also gain nothing. Anyone who would vote for her would never vote for McCain anyway. His focal point on gaining people's trust and belief in hope would be shot, since she also is also nothing but an establishment candidate.

As a Libertarian, I tend to lean toward the Republicans (although I have never voted for a Republican Presidential candidate). I am leaning toward Obama, but if Clinton gets the VP nomination, Obama is off my radar. I will either bite my lip and vote for McCain, hoping he tends back toward his maverick past, or I will again find my third party candidate and vote on principle, sacrificing realist expectations of selecting a winner and sticking with my principles. Being honest to what you believe is more important than being with a winner.

This is not necessarily bad for Obama. In my entire voting career, I have never voted for the winning Presidential candidate.

Dane,

Me thinks you know too much! You've done all this thinking and analyzing and my vote is going to be based on my hatred of GW and what he has done to our country over the past 8 years. If we get another Republican in there, it's just going to be more of the same -- war and loss of life for no reason, lack of education funding, religious zealots and loss of women's rights. Not to mention, economic crisis and all that.

My reason for voting for the democratic candidate is to keep McCain and his kind of riff-raff out of the Oval Office. I don't care if he's been a maverick in the past or not -- he's never going to be the kind of maverick I want in there!

This is based on my gut and the fact that I never watch the debates, listen to the news or read the newspaper! It also includes not reading all of the e-mails that Hillary's been sending me since I signed up on her web site!

So -- how many informed voters like you are out there? If there were enough, that third party person would win! Heck -- I could be swayed -- I voted for Ross Perot!!! :)

i try not to hold mccain's bending to the establishment against him. that's politics, and i think in his situation he had to see the big picture and realized that by playing along he could get himself into a position to do some greater good. i think he will return to his maverick self if elected.

i also tend to lean toward the republican side of things but i have given serious though to a vote for obama. although if he does pick hillary as a running mate i can't vote for him. it may be evil to think this but i suspect that if she became vice president something would mysteriously happen to him and she would ascend the throne.

right now i'm leaning toward mccain though as i think that his willingness in the past to swim against the stream tempered by what i think is better judgement from his experience in life make him better prepared right now. maybe obama will be the better choice in 4 years.

I have another issue with Obama that occurred over this past weekend – he stepped away from his controversial church. Okay, go with me here.

For most people, regardless of their belief system (even atheists or agnostics), their beliefs sit at the core of who they are. Yes, ones beliefs evolve, and are shaped by their life experiences. But, for the most part, if you did something completely against your core beliefs, it would make a mockery of those beliefs. My assumption is that most would not abandon their core beliefs.

For some, a way to nurture their beliefs is to attend a house of worship. I attend Timberwood Church in Nisswa, and I really enjoy going there. I enjoy the fact that the ministers don’t tell me what to believe, but allow the word and worship to speak to me on their own, through the Spirit.

Obama has been a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago for 20 years. Not a short period of time. The ministers have espoused racially charged remarks on multiple occasions, not just a single incident. I have no direct knowledge of this, but my guess is that a minister who has said such remarks in the recent past has long held those beliefs, and has likely voiced those opinions multiple times. I’m pretty sure that if Obama went to the church as often as he said that he did, he heard the tirades before. They were no surprise to him.

Last weekend, Obama announced that he and his family have left the church.

Why.

Yes, I, too, would have left that church, but I would have left it long, long before the elapsing of 20 years. I would assume that Obama would have left earlier, also, if he deeply disagreed with what was being spoken from the pulpit.

What respect I had for him, I lost last weekend. I might not agree with what his church taught, but I do respect a person who stands firm for their beliefs, whatever they are and come what may. I would have had way more respect for Obama if he would have said, “Piss off! This is my church.” Instead, he left his church for political gain, not for personal beliefs. I can’t help but wonder what other of his core beliefs will be compromised and thrown to the side of the road if he becomes president. Is this the guy that I want on the international stage? His strength and content of his character were severely damaged in my eyes.

Most politicians compromise portions of themselves for political ends. However, most don’t throw their church, the symbol of their belief system, under the bus.

I’m really going to have a difficult time voting for him, and, at this point, am actually leaning toward McCain, too.

Sorry Marna, but I think you're in the minority on this one, but every one is entitled to their own ideas. I don't like GW Bush like everybody else, but I will not call myself a dem or a rep, I vote on what I see in a person. If the candidate in the election has something that I like, I'm all for that person, man, woman, black or white. Obama scares the hell out of me, this guy has done nothing but throw an elaborate smoke screen over the entire US, if you listen to any of his speaches, he will tell you absolutely NOTHING!!!!! Hillary was at least giving us her "solutions" to the problems that face us, but Obama had nothing but retoric (sp), he hasn't given me one single answer to any of our problems, the only thing that he can do is knock down and beat up the other candidates.

I don't know if anyone has read the Left Behind series of books, they have a charicter in those books that, to me resembles Obama, the charismatic politician that eventually takes over the world and sends us into Armagedon. Now is Obama the Antichrist? Not sure, but I'm not ready to find out!!! Vote McCain
